Leucothoe Catesbaei – Veriagated Leucothoe

Leucothoe Catesbaei – Veriagated Leucothoe Zone 3 Grows 3 to 4 ft. tall and wide. Grow in full sun to full shade. These small evergreen shrubs have a graceful arching habit and flower in early spring. The more sun this plant gets, the more spectacular the fall and winter foliage seems to be. Not well known and thus underutilized in the landscape.

The event is always FREE and we invite you to join us this morning, if you're up and about.

It's time to start planning your spring containers!

Annuals are in and Mother's Day is around the corner! According to the Cornell Cooperative website, May 10th is the official frost free date for us in Rosendale, NY. Check the map for the frost free date in your area and plan to put out your annuals and hanging baskets accordingly.

There are a few annuals that can take colder temperatures than others. If you just can't wait any longer try these varieties:

Just as cool weather crops like spinach and broccoli rabe benefit from early spring conditions, so too will ornamental annuals like Calibrachoa, Bacopa, Petunias, Osteospermum and Argyranthemum. For annuals like Diascia and Nemesia the cool weather is the time of their peak performance.

Oh-la-la Lilacs!

In our May insert we cover how to prune lilacs, but I forgot to mentions that when you bring them in as a bouquet, hammer the woody stems. You do this so the flowers can absorb water in the vase. Margret Roach has a great how-to on her blog.

Sensation Lilac - dark purple buds open to white and purple blooms. Striking flowers with and equally powerful lilac scent.

We also brought in a new variety of reblooming lilac this year: Boomerang Lilac. It stays small and keeps blooming!
